Fitzpatrick skin types IV through VI require a fundamentally different approach to aesthetic medicine than lighter skin tones. At Urban MedSpa, this isn't an afterthought — it's our foundation.
The Core Risk: Post-Inflammatory Hyperpigmentation (PIH)
Melanin-rich skin responds more aggressively to inflammation. Any treatment that triggers even mild inflammation — lasers, aggressive peels, certain microneedling techniques — can leave behind PIH that looks worse than the original concern.
This is why we never apply a one-size-fits-all protocol.
What Works Beautifully
Hydrafacial: Safe for all Fitzpatrick types. The vortex-suction extraction + simultaneous serum infusion creates zero thermal injury and is genuinely transformative for darker skin.
Chemical Peels (Targeted Selection): PCA and VI peels in our selection are specifically formulated with Fitzpatrick IV-VI in mind. We never use TCA at high concentrations without prep protocols. We pre-treat with tyrosinase inhibitors for 4 weeks before any deeper peel.
Microneedling: Mechanical collagen stimulation — zero heat, zero UV interaction. One of the safest, most effective treatments for acne scarring on melanin-rich skin.
Kybella and Dermal Fillers: Injectable treatments carry no skin-tone-related risks when performed correctly.
What We Approach With Caution
High-energy laser treatments (IPL, ablative resurfacing) require extremely specialized protocols on darker skin. We only perform these with formal Fitzpatrick assessment, patch testing, and extended prep periods.
Our Commitment
Beauty standards have historically excluded melanin-rich skin from high-end aesthetics. We exist to end that — by building protocols that celebrate the specific architecture of deeper skin tones rather than trying to approximate results designed for lighter complexions.
